Calendula plant(pot marigold) care, uses and benefits

Calendula plant is most beautiful loveable flowering plant, grow at garden and in planter as houseplant for decoration. Calendula(pot marigold) is a herbs plant use in medicine (homeopathic) ,cosmetics and in foods (edible flowers). Calendula plant's scientific name is Calendula officinalis and it's common names are Scotch marigold, pot marigold and common marigold.Calendula is native to Southern Europe and also in warm temperate regions of the world, this plant is from Asteraceae family. Calendula flowers Have orange and yellow colours. 

                                  Calendula plant is seedling in 15 October to December and its take 2 months to start flowering, give flowers March to April. Then collect their seeds and save for next year.

Care of calendula plant

Soil
         Calendula plant can grow in any type soil but make it well drain,To make soil well drain mix 20 % sand. Calendula plant grow properly and give alot of flower in 8" to 12" inch pot, 70 % garden soil, 20%sand or cocopeat and 10% leaf mold or vermi compost. 

Watering
                     Calendula plant grow in miost soil so water it when soil top surface get dry 1 inch down.Overwatered and underwatered plant get in stress and there leaves tips get yellowing and brown, your plant can die and you miss their flowering.

Sunlight
                 Calendula plant grow well in full day Or 4 to 6 hours direct sunlight and warm climate. If you place it in  shade area for full day so it's not flowering  Or very small improper flowering.Calendula plant's seeds also need full day Or half day direct sunlight to germinate.

Fertilize
                 Calendula plant don't have high requirement of fertilizer. If you already add fertilize in soil when you were pot it, then next fertilize it once in a month when it's start flowering. You can use vermi compost Or leaf mold, you can also use this N. P. K (19) . 

Temperature
                          Calendula can't survive in too hot temperature Or low temperature. Calendula plant grow well in 21°C to 24°C temperature range.

Size
          Calendula plant can grow 31 inch long in height and 12 to 24 inch wide , their leave are 2 to 7 inch long. In 8" to 12" pot  it can grow 12" to 24"  long in height. 

Pruning
                 Calendula plant need regular pruning Or pinching while flowering. Pinch their dead flower(seed pots) with long stem for make it bushy and more flowers. Remove their yellow or brown old leaves for better look.

Propagation
                          Calendula plant mostly  propagate from seed, just collect their dry seed after flowering  and  next reason sow them in 15 October to December. Calendula plant's seed germinate in full sunlight and its take 4 to 6 day to germinate.

           Calendula plant's flower,pollen, leaves and stem all very useful in medicine , cosmetics, food and lotions treat skin problems Because that plant flower contain antioxidants , carotenoids flavoxanthin, triterpenoid esters and leaves contain lutein, zeaxanthin and beta carotene etc. 
                        Calendula plant's flowers are edible. Flower petals are using to decorate food and colouring salad. We can also make tea or tincture of calendula flowers petals that improve immunity system, sorl throat and fever. 
How to make tincture of calendula flowers
          If you want to make tincture of calendula flowers, you need glass jar and alcohol (use vodka ). Collect calendula flowers in glass jar then 40 % alcohol and 60% water mix in jar, Place it for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks filter through clothe or tea filter and collect tincture in glass bottle that tincture you can save for 5 years.                        Calendula Flower oil use  in creams and lotions to treat skin rash,eczema,heal wounds, wrinkles, diaper rashes, dry skin. You can make oil from Calendula flowers 

How to make Calendula oil from flowers
           Collect fresh petats of Calendula flowers in glass jar then fill Olive oil or organic sunflower oil make sure all patels are dip in oil.You need to place jar fornt of window  or shade area for 4 week, Shake jar 2 to 3 times in week. After 4 week filter oil from tea or coffee filter .and collect it in glass bottles you can use it for 1 year. This oil is so gentle and you can use for baby rashes  othere skin problems. 
 If you don't have enough flowers or don't want to make at home so buy it from market or online there are many types creams lotions. When I don't have any idea about make oil at home I was use Hapdco calendula plus lotion when my 2 year old daughter have dry skin, rash and itching and it was work and heal all problems.
