Song of india plant (Dracaena reflexa) care

Song of india is a tree and its scientific name is Dracaena reflexa and species in Asparagaceae family. Song of india plant is native to Mozamabique, Mauritius and other nearby islands of the Indian Ocean.Song of india growing very slow  and straight upside. Flowering in mid winter,its flower have white colour and nice fragrant. That is growing as houseplant and ornamental plant, and that plant also use in medicine.

Soil

         Song of India plant can grow in any type of soil but you can use garden soil with sand, peat moss or shredded bark for well drainage and rich potting mix.

Water

               Song of India plant Need average watering  in summer like moist soil. Water you plant properly make sure water come out from drainage hole that mean you plant all root get water, next water when soil surface dry out completely 1 inch.

                          Don't overwater or underwater song of India plant that kill your plant.Overwatering sign is plant's  leaves tip get brown  or brown spots on leaves. Song of India plant like rainy season and gorw fast, in rainy you need to safe your plant from overwatering, make soil is well drain water not hold in pot for long time. 

                Underwatering sign is plant's leaves get curl, dropping and leaves get brown. 

Sunlight

                   Song of India plant like shade and bright light to low light . In summer full day direct sunlight burn your plant's leaves but morning or evening time 2 hours direct sunlight is ok. In winter song of India plant survive full day direct sunlight. You can place it indoor but you need window for bright light and good air ventilation in your room.

                   If you have no window in your room so you need to provide a artificial light but that also not  enough for your plant growth you need to place it outdoor for 1 to 3 days every week for fast growth

Fertilize

                Song of India plant don't need any rich fertilize that plant can grow well without regular fertilize. If you want to fertilize your plant so you can use vermi compost, peat moss,leaf mold or liquid fertilize (NPK) in spring and summer that is growing season.

 Plowing

                If you use normal garden soil or clay soil for song of india plant so you need to plowing once a month, because after watering soil get tight and hard so oxigen can't reach to roots properly and if you use cocopeat or shredded bark so you don't need to plowing.Before fertilize your plant you should plowing soil surface  and then fertilize, that help to mix fertilize to soil easy. Plowing also necessary to plowing and remove fungus or algae and loose soil surface that help roots to get oxygen and nutrition. When you plowing or weeding  there is risk to damage roots you do carefully and use good plowing gardening tools.

Temperature

                         Song of India plant grow properly in 18 to 25°C (64 to 77°F) temperature, and can survive in low temperature too cold.

Size

             Song of India is  tree can grow up to 4 to 5  meters in height at thier native area. As houseplant in 12 to16 inchs pot that plant can gorw 3 to 4 feets in height.

 

Propagation

                         Song of India plant (dracaena reflexa) mostly propagating from stem cutting. For best results you need 4 to 6 inch stem cutting then remove their lower leaves and place it in soil to 1 to 2 inch down or in water. Stem start roots in 2 to 3 weeks. Pruning

               Song of India plant is need pruning when it's get 2 to 3 feet up because it's getting bend and weid shape. If you want to make your plant bushy so you need to prune regular.
